Bobby Burns Cocktail for Burns Night

January 23, 2014 by Renee

Bobby Burns Cocktail

In lieu of haggis, I am celebrating Burns Night with a Bobby Burns Cocktail.

This deep rich, slightly sweet tipple boasts a light spicy edge and while I don’t think it’s actually named for Robert Burns (no one knows for sure), it’s a far better option for the “offally” offended.

Robert Burns, poet and lyricist, was born in Alloway, Ayrshire, Scotland on January 25, 1759 and is one of the country’s most notable figures. He was dubbed the Bard of Ayrshire and was simply called- The Bard.   He gave us “Auld Lang Syne”  which often, folks can be found crooning out after a long night of drinking on New Year’s Eve, so it’s only fitting that we celebrate his birth night with a cocktail bearing his name.

Of course he also gave us “Red, Red Rose” , “A Fond Kiss” and “Tam o’ Shanter“.  But on Burns Night it’s traditional to grab the bagpipes, have a Scotch and recite Burns’ “Address to A Haggis”.

So take a sip or three and read along.

Bobby Burns Cocktail

2 oz. Scotch Whiskey

2 oz. Sweet Vermouth

Dash of Benedictine

Stir all ingredients with ice in a glass, strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

Serve with a twist of lemon peel.

Address To A Haggis

Fair fa’ your honest, sonsie face,

Great chieftain o’ the puddin-race!

Aboon them a’ ye tak your place,

Painch, tripe, or thairm:

Weel are ye wordy of a grace

As lang’s my arm.

The groaning trencher there ye fill,

Your hurdies like a distant hill,

Your pin wad help to mend a mill

In time o’ need,

While thro’ your pores the dews distil

Like amber bead.

His knife see rustic Labour dight,

An’ cut ye up wi’ ready slight,

Trenching your gushing entrails bright

Like onie ditch;

And then, O what a glorious sight,

Warm-reekin, rich!

Then, horn for horn, they stretch an’ strive:

Deil tak the hindmost! on they drive,

Till a’ their weel-swall’d kytes belyve,

Are bent like drums;

Then auld Guidman, maist like to rive,

‘Bethankit!’ hums.

Is there that owre his French ragout

Or olio that wad staw a sow,

Or fricassee wad mak her spew

Wi’ perfect sconner,

Looks down wi’ sneering, scornfu’ view

On sic a dinner?

Poor devil! see him owre his trash,

As feckless as a wither’d rash,

His spindle shank, a guid whip-lash,

His nieve a nit;

Thro’ bluidy flood or field to dash,

O how unfit!

But mark the Rustic, haggis-fed,

The trembling earth resounds his tread.

Clap in his walie nieve a blade,

He’ll make it whissle;

An’ legs, an’ arms, an’ heads will sned,

Like taps o’ thrissle.

Ye Pow’rs wha mak mankind your care,

And dish them out their bill o ‘fare,

Auld Scotland wants nae skinking ware

That jaups in luggies;

But, if ye wish her gratefu’ prayer,

Gie her a Haggis!

– Robert Burns

And if you’ve managed to get this far, make yourself another drink- you deserve it!- and wish The Bard a Happy Birthday! Cheers!

(Always drink responsibly. Don’t drink and drive and never get into a car with anyone who has been drinking. Take a Taxi if you must.)

The Beaujolais Nouveau is Here!

November 21, 2013 by Renee

The Beaujolais Nouveau is Here!  The Beaujolais Nouveau is Here!  For some, it’s a load of marketing nonsense and a lot of fuss over a cheap (inexpensive?) bottle of wine. But for some, it’s an unmissable tradition. I fall into the latter category but am well aware of the first. It’s a time of giddy excitement and anticipation that marks the nearness of Thanksgiving, the unveiling of a new label design and for this Francophile, it’s a time that allows me to feel a little bit closer to my home away from home (even though in France, it’s not as big a deal.)

Never mind that the wine is very young, overly sweet and fruity, light in color, easy to drink, lacks all complexity and has an extremely short shelf life (don’t buy a case unless you plan to finish it by January!). That’s not what you are really buying it for. For me, it’s the whole cliche that makes it a bit of fun.

It’s also the allure that draws you in. A certain mystique. And a certain hangover.

On the stroke of midnight on the third Thursday of the month of November, a new vintage is unveiled and only then can you indulge. But a moment before you could not because it’s a forbidden by law. A bit of prohibition if you will-which is always exciting!

Once the wait is over and the bell has rung, you can choose your bottles and walk confidently out of the store knowing that you helped perpetuate the tradition of celebrating the year’s harvest.

Usually, I buy a few bottles from different producers but always must  have at least one created by Georges Duboeuf, the man responsible for the Beaujolais Nouveau marketing genius. This year I also have a Christophe Pacalet and a Laurence et Remi Dufaitre.

I am excited for the last one. It’s considered to be a ‘Good’ bottle. Rémi and Laurence are a young couple, who created a winery in Saint-Etienne-des-Oullières on the right bank of the Saone River in 2001 and have become well known in Paris as they produce many natural wines.  Their vineyards are mainly in the village of Brouilly. Typically, their wines (and this Nouveau) are lighter, taste of fresh red fruits and are a lighter jewel toned color.

I am looking at a few more bottles with a Maison PUR Beaujolais-Nouveau being a top recommendation along with a Joseph Drouhin Beaujolais Villages Nouveau (whose whites I am a fan of).

So now through December it is a good time to add a few bottles to your own holiday table or give a few away as gifts. And if you find one you like, let me know.

NaBloPoMo-Veteran’s Day and a Bottle of 2011 Murphy-Goode Homefront Red- Grapes for a Good Cause

November 10, 2013 by Renee

photoMurphy-Goode winery, known for their “goode” take on food, wine and life, recently launched a new red, blended varietal- Homefront Red. Incorporating Syrah, Merlot, Petite Sirah and Zinfandel grapes, this is a wine that is easy drinking and food friendly. It’s bold and full of flavors- like black cherry and raspberry, vanilla and toast with a nice long finish. It’s the perfect wine to share with friends at your next dinner party or at your game day tailgate. Plus, it’s not just a good wine, it’s for a good cause!

Beyond its food-friendly qualities, Homefront Red offers much more – relief for veterans and military families in need. For every bottle sold, a portion of the proceeds from Homefront Red will go to Operation Homefront, a non-profit organization that provides emergency financial assistance to veterans and their families. Murphy-Goode hopes to raise $300,000 from the sales of Homefront Red – every bottle sold truly counts.

Since its inception in 2002, Operation Homefront has bestowed more than $170 million dollars of funding to programs that benefit military families. These programs include food assistance, vision care, community events, holiday programs, moving assistance and its Wounded Warrior Wives program. Murphy-Goode’s contribution will help continue this financial assistance to national military families in need.

So what would compel Murphy-Goode to undertake this effort? For winemaker Dave Ready Jr. this was a cause that was close to his heart- his dad served in Vietnam and he had two grandfathers in WWII plus a great-grandfather in WWI. Giving back to the military was an easy mission.

This wine won’t be available for very long as Murphy-Goode has already shipped its entire supply and is estimating it will be completely gone from store shelves sometime in December. So if you see it, stock up now! You’ll be glad you did.

Disclosure: I received a bottle of Murphy Goode Homefront Red to review. As always, the thoughts and opinions are my own.

PSA: Please drink responsibly! Don’t drink and drive and never get into a car with someone who does. Buckle up. It saves lives. And by all means, take a taxi if you have had too much to drink! Better yet, stay home and drink there!

A special thank you to all the Veterans out there for your service and dedication to our freedoms.

Chicken Parm… a nice family dinner. Can’t beat Chicken Parm… a nice family dinner. Can’t beat comfort food! #dinner #family #familystyle
Totally forgot to post the cut of my soap here. It Totally forgot to post the cut of my soap here. Its been very busy and I’m like a whirling dervish in all different directions. On the food front we made some favorites-Chicken Marbella that sustained us for a week and also a Corned Beef and Cabbage dish because it is March after all. But it was good to have the comfort foods we love and old standards as they provide the most contentment when it’s chaos everywhere else. Regular work and then some wholesale orders and getting the line poured for our Spring/Summer scents. And helping others with a few website issues. And kids. Thankfully, it seems to all be under control now and I’m really happy to be busy. All good things!

The Eucalyptus Mint cut (smells amazing!) turned out so nice. Very happy with it. Had a request for a classic Cucumber Melon soap. Also a lovely fresh and clean spring/ summer scent. Available soon. But the Spring/Summer line of candles are done and are now available! Yay!
