Bienvenidos a Cuba! Cuban Cuisine Comes to Long Island as Havana Central Opens at Roosevelt Field

January 11, 2013 by Renee

Winter doldrums move over. A bit of Miami and a lot of Cuba has arrived! Havana Central, one of my favorite restaurants, has just opened its fourth location at the Roosevelt Field Mall in Garden City.  Wednesday night we got a sneak peak at their Grand Opening party!

Serving the most delicious mojitos outside of the Caribbean, Havana Central offers authentic Cuban cuisine and live Latin music in a luxurious tropical setting reminiscent of Havana’s pre-revolutionary resort lifestyle.

With a color palette of teal, coral and lush shades of green anchored with cooling shades of white, cream and gray, the new 13,ooo sq. ft. main dining room features cigar-toned leather booths draped in flowing curtains with slow moving ceiling fans that instantly transport diners to the by-gone era when Havana was called the “Paris of the Caribbean”.

The magnificent centerpiece bar, modeled after Havana’s original Sloppy Joe Bar, showcases bottles of rum in a striking mahogany case encircled with art deco pendant lights. Here, bartenders are mixing up Havana Central’s famous cocktails and muddling mint for their tangy and tasty mojitos. Patrons can also enjoy sangria and mojitos made tableside with fresh, tropical ingredients and premium liqueurs.

Jeremy Merrin, founder and president of Havana Central, opened the first Havana Central in Union Square 10 years ago and it is now the premier large-format Latin restaurant chain in the NY Metropolitan area. I was lucky enough to frequent the Times Square location often as it was just out the back door of my office building. My co-workers and I shared many a happy hour and “business” lunches there!

Says Merrin, “We’re excited to partner with Simon Properties at the best location on Long Island. Locals will now be able to experience the tastes, sounds and energy of pre-revolutionary Havana.”

Havana Central

Stanley Licairac, Havana Central’s corporate chef, designed the menus of traditional Cuban fare stating “We particularly aim to put those who grew up understanding that flavorful ingredients should be slowly cooked with love and passion, as Cuban food is, back in touch with their roots and make them feel at home. The opportunity to share the flavors, textures and colors of these comfort foods is at the heart of Havana Central’s offerings.”

Licairac’s passion is evident in each of his creations. We were treated to hors d’oeuvre versions of many of the classic dishes, along with a “design it yourself” Paella station. Chef Licairac’s Handmade Empanadas ($3) are crispy on the outside and fall apart in the mouth like a slow, savory stew. The Cuban Sandwich ($12) stuffed with smoked ham, roast pork, Swiss cheese, pickles and mustard is quintessential Cuban fare.  Other signature dishes such as Pineapple Chicken Pollo con Piña ($15.50); Braised Beef, Peppers & Onions- Ropa Vieja ($17.50); Cuban Flan ($6) and my personal favorite, Tres Leches Cake ($8) can all be found at the Roosevelt Field location.

Coming out for this special ribbon-cutting event was the Mayor of Garden City, Donald T. Brudie as well as other noted local officials.

Kitchen Reviews-Niu Noodle House Opens in the West Village, NYC

October 24, 2012 by Renee

Last week we were invited to a tasting dinner at Niu Noodle House, a new Ramen noodle restaurant that opened about 4 months ago in Greenwich Village.

Do not be fooled by the interior- there are few Asian inspired design elements here. This restaurant’s vibe is modern, eclectic and feels very much like a pub with dark beams combined with funky wallpaper. At the front of the restaurant is a long, well stocked bar. There are a lot of interesting things to look at while you are waiting for your dinner to arrive but you aren’t there for the decor.

Niu Noodle House’s main focus is on creating freshly made soup noodles in a variety of  styles, broths and flavors. And this, they do very well!

The menu features appetizers of dim sum, satays and spring rolls. Of the many options, we choose the Flank Steak Spring Rolls, Vegetable Spring rolls and the Special Steam Char Siu Pork Buns to start.  Each of the appetizers were better than the last! The Vegetable Spring Rolls were  extra crispy and filled with flavorful vegetables. The beef version was packed solid with a well seasoned ground beef. It was almost like a meatball encased in a spring roll wrapper.  They were both accompanied by a dipping sauce that had just the right amount of heat to it and wasn’t too overpowering.

The pork buns though, were our favorite!  Light, fluffy and filled with tender, juicy slices of pork that melted in your mouth. It was served with the house special Hoisin sauce, pungent and perfectly sweet.

For our main course it was hard to choose from all the varieties of noodle soups on the menu. With the help of our highly skilled and attentive server, she recommended some great choices based on our likes/dislikes. In the end, we picked the Niu Beef Trifecta and the Sangi Chicken.

Soon, large black bowls  that were filled to the brim arrived  with an abundance of savory delights in them.  The Beef Trifecta was filled with homemade thin Ramen noodles, flank steak, short ribs, beef steak, scallions, and a spear of  asparagus. The chicken soup had heartier noodles than the beef’s more delicate kind and tasted like a very good chicken soup- one that would seriously kick a cold’s butt.  Mushrooms, thin slices of chicken breast, and vegetables were present in every bite.

A special delicacy – a wasabi, tempura battered piece of seaweed floated gracefully on the surface and a side bowl of sweet corn kernels accompanied  both of the soups. The broths were both very flavorful and  quite delicious. Ari preferred the beef and I loved the chicken, so we can safely say they both were excellent choices. We were hard pressed to leave some behind and not take a doggie bag to go- tempted as we were!

(A cute touch is the cow chopstick holder.)

After all the food we just enjoyed, we were hesitant to order dessert but we were so very glad we did!  We shared the Green Tea Shaved Ice Cream. What a treat!  A wonderful combination of Green Tea flavor and lightly sented Rose Water topped with Fruit Gels and tiny flavored Lychee balls that had been Spherified –  their liquid interior bursting in our mouths.  It was a delectable and refreshing way to end a delightful meal.

We are really looking forward to going back and tasting the soup dumplings that the manager strongly recommended we try.  And,  to have some more of that shaved ice cream! Yum!

My Morning At ABC’s The Chew

October 29, 2011 by Renee

I have a new daytime distraction. It’s not Rachel Ray or The View, and certainly not soaps (are there any left?)  It’s the new ABC show, The Chew. It’s funny, informative and I adore each of the hosts and how they interact with each other. Plus, its food and entertaining related; right up my alley! So when I had a last minute opportunity to attend a taping, I jumped at the chance.

It was a taping for the 23rd episode. I was shocked that it has only been on the air less than a month because the show itself seemed very tight and had all the kinks worked out.

The day I attended, the guests were Debi Mazar and Gabriele Corcos, hosts of Extra Virgin on the Cooking Channel. They are quite a comical pair and served up some fancy grilled cheese sandwiches that kids and adults would love.

The warm up comedian, RC Smith,  was hysterical and kept the audience revved up throughout the show- even though he really didn’t have to because Gordon Elliot, Clinton Kelly and Carla Hall did a nice job of that on their own; dancing and singing 70’s disco songs between segments.

The Halloween themed show featured several things you could make at home for the big scary day including my personal favorite- brains in formaldehyde- a head of cauliflower soaking in water that has been tinted with red food coloring. Fun!

The highlight of the day was receiving a copy of Mario Batali’s new cookbook, Simple Family Meals from My Home to Yours which I will test several recipes from and I am sure, if they are like the one’s in his other books, will turn out really well and will be huge hits in our house.

I am looking forward to going back again and vying for a seat at the counter.

You can catch The Chew on ABC at 1pm EST.

Some of the photos, including the top photo of Mario were taken by Jorge Ortega, who happened to be sitting next to me at the show.  I had put my camera back and was thrilled he said yes to sending me some of his pics. They are used here with permission. Thanks Jorge!

Totally forgot to post the cut of my soap here. It Totally forgot to post the cut of my soap here. Its been very busy and I’m like a whirling dervish in all different directions. On the food front we made some favorites-Chicken Marbella that sustained us for a week and also a Corned Beef and Cabbage dish because it is March after all. But it was good to have the comfort foods we love and old standards as they provide the most contentment when it’s chaos everywhere else. Regular work and then some wholesale orders and getting the line poured for our Spring/Summer scents. And helping others with a few website issues. And kids. Thankfully, it seems to all be under control now and I’m really happy to be busy. All good things!

The Eucalyptus Mint cut (smells amazing!) turned out so nice. Very happy with it. Had a request for a classic Cucumber Melon soap. Also a lovely fresh and clean spring/ summer scent. Available soon. But the Spring/Summer line of candles are done and are now available! Yay!
